Later this month, Sophian will kick off their Australian tour in Brisbane on October 24. The run of shows will continue on to Brunswick, Geelong, Belgrave, Frankston, Terrigal, Sydney and Wollongong, before wrapping up in Perth on November 15.
KNEE DEEP IN THE OCEAN (CHAPTER: CHANGE)
Inspired by a vivid childhood memory of frontman Soph's mother standing knee-deep in the ocean, this song reflects the tension between running away from life's challenges and confronting them. Its message is clear: you can't solve your problems by avoiding them. A conversation with his mother, where they shared their life stories, sparked the realization that running away from difficulties has been a recurring theme. With its free-flowing songwriting process, Knee Deep In The Ocean captures the natural evolution of change. The chorus, "Maybe a lifetime of running away," encapsulates the song's essence of awakening to personal growth.
CHANGING THE WEATHER (CHAPTER: CHANGE)
Using weather as a metaphor for personal transformation, this track dives deep into the struggle of self-change. It speaks to how challenging growth can be, even when you know it's necessary for yourself and those around you. The song stems from conversations about wanting to become the best version of oneself for loved ones. Created in an impromptu jam session, its catchy chorus became the foundation for the entire song. The line "I didn't know it was this hard, yeah / I wish someone had told me" captures the unexpected difficulty of personal evolution.
LOTUS (CHAPTER: GROWTH)
Inspired by the symbolism of the lotus flower, this song emphasises kindness and empathy, particularly toward friends and loved ones who are also going through life's first-time experiences. It reflects on how everyone is learning and growing at their own pace. Written for a best friend who grew distant, the song reveals that both were undergoing similar struggles but didn't know how to reach out. With an acoustic-driven melody and open tunings, Lotus brings out a tender sense of reflection, especially in the bridge, which stands out as one of the band's favourite moments.
MILLION MILES (CHAPTER: GROWTH)
This song explores the feeling of inadequacy, the internal battle of working hard yet feeling like you're still far from your goal. It’s a powerful reminder that self-worth is not dictated by external standards. Co-written with Nadene from King Ibis, Million Miles is a reminder that sometimes, what feels unattainable is much closer than it seems. Falling into the EP's growth chapter, it is about learning to be kinder to oneself and recognizing that your best effort is enough, even when perfection seems out of reach.
WAIT FOR YOU (CHAPTER: LOVE)
Wait For You centres on unconditional love—waiting and supporting someone no matter what. It was written as a personal message from the frontman to his wife, symbolizing love that stands strong through all seasons of growth. Slowing down the tempo, the band built the song around keys and a catchy chorus, with the help of Pete Lucas, who added the distinctive keys solo that opens the bridge. The emotional weight of loving someone unconditionally shines through, making it a heartfelt highlight in the EP's love chapter.
SOMEWHERE IN BETWEEN (CHAPTER: LOVE)
As the title track of the EP, Somewhere In Between, reflects the complex journey of healing and self-acceptance. It speaks to the experience of trauma and how it doesn't have to define who you are. Rooted in frontman Soph's personal experience with childhood sexual abuse, the song is about making peace with the past and embracing one's true self. With a more rock-driven sound, this track stands out as a high-energy anthem for self-love. The powerful pre-chorus, “Here I am at twenty-nine... Head above the water", captures the essence of resilience and finding peace.
