right now, forever is out now!

Aotearoa/New Zealand-born singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer Lucian Ricehas dropped his debut EP, right now, forever. To celebrate, the musician is taking us through the collection of songs track-by-track.
“It feels like the end of the beginning—not quite a ‘goodbye’ to my youth but a recognition that things change. The whole concept is about living in the present, cherishing today because it’s the only thing that will be ‘forever’. Each song represents a moment I was trying to make sense of, and now they’re memories stitched together into something new,” Rice shares,
BRAND NEW DAY
The song Sunny Sunday by Leona Naess was in rotation a lot for me at the time, so was definitely a big inspiration for it sonically. I always talk about this song being me trying to avoid the subtext & just addressing how I felt a bit more head on. That post heartbreak thing where you finally have the headspace to look at things clearly, I guess. Real special working on this one with two of the best in Tom & Garrett.
RIGHT NOW, FOREVER
Just a fun song about a fun time with a fun person. Real fleeting stuff. I think the lyrics would say I was a bit more torn and down at the time, second guessing whether I should or shouldn’t or whatever. It was a nice spruce up of feeling something rather than nothing in my life, so I’m grateful for that, lol. Song started out with me trying to rip Some Jingle Jangle Morning by Mary Lou Lord, but I think it’s become its own thing now.
SPINEBACK
One of those songs I never really believed in until I did. My friends would go bonkers over the demo, which was just a loop of the main idea. Tom just kept bullying me into trying to do some vocals over it, which I eventually did (and hated) then he just went to town on getting it to where it is now. Eventually, he was right and I was wrong, now it’s one of my favourites off the record.
FFS
Pop music. Or at least me trying to do that haha. I think all artists crave ‘a pop banger’ every now and then, I get real imposter-y about that whole thing. I’ve gone through phases of wanting to be a bit more ‘pop’ or whatever, but I think I like just proving to myself I can do it if I want. That’s what this song is, just me trying to put my ‘pop’ hat on.
NINEZERO
Just a love song to the nineties. I mean, all my music is but this was a little more conscious. Had this noise loop and then some gazer demo and just kinda merged the two together with Tom to make it what it is.
CAN'T SEE YOU
Half Right by Elliott Smith (Heatmiser version) Almost every waking hour for a few weeks I’d play that song. It rubbed off eventually and can’t you see became my version of that. Special song to me and there’s not much more to say, I do all the talking on the song.
right now, forever is out now!
