Brisbane/Meanjin-based artist Ixaras has dropped her debut EP, Full Lover Fake Friend. To celebrate, the musician is taking us through the collection of songs track-by-track.
"I wanted this project to be a representation of my youth and a time capsule of the teenage experience," Ixaras shares with MILKY. "A lot of the lyrics talk about the insecurities that I faced growing up and handling it all through writing this project really helped me navigate a lot of my relationships.
NEW TO THIS
I wrote this song when I was thirteen, so having it finally come out now and having people find comfort in it is surreal. This song is a confession of my inexperience to love that is emphasised through a fusion of post-punk guitar tones and indie pop rock melodies.
FRESH FIGURE
I wanted to make a break up track that would be super fun to play live, so I thought it was important to really build the climax at the end of the song, while still having a strong intro. I was listening to a lot of Gang of Youths and thought that the drums straight in was really sick, especially with how angsty the lyrics were. I have grown a lot from when I wrote this one but it really was too good a track to leave out the project haha!
SPROUTS
I LOVE 80s synths- for this song just that sprinkle top line was really what brought it all together when we were making it. Sprouts is a song about growing up- with themes about having to mother your partner, which in the end is not healthy for either party. I wanted Sprouts during the verses to be very intimate and subtle then segway to a punchy chorus.
MEAN
Mean is a track about someone taking advantage of the fact that you like them, I really wanted that garage rock feel with an iconic riff playing throughout, this is one of my favourite songs to play live- especially the ending.
FULL LOVER FAKE FRIEND
This being one of my most honest tracks of the project is why it ended up being the title of the EP. Writing this one really helped me figure out what I was feeling- you know when your brain just gets too messy to think straight? It talks about a lot of push and pull in relationships, and realising that not everything someone does is with good intent.
SALT
Salt is one of my favourite tracks on the project, just a fun throwback to the 2000s with a mix of strings and honest lyrics. It’s about that moment when you realise that maybe you need to move on because in the end your time is more valuable than the emotional damage that would be caused if you stayed any longer.
WORRY
Touching again on that subject, Worry is a track about a partner being emotionally unavailable despite wanting to make it work anyway. I wanted the end section of the song to be a representation of different thoughts coming in all at once that would cause worry and anxiety to someone going through that.
SHE'S ALREADY OUT THE DOORSTEP
I wanted this track to feel like a memory. With the melancholy neo-indie guitar tones and layered vocal melodies. The song is about closure and reminiscing on the past, and I wanted to really symbolise that with the main chorus melody being the guitar riff at the start of the song.
