Overthinking is out now!

Canberra-based hip-hop artist YNG Martyr has shared his new single, Overthinking. We caught up with the musician to chat about the release and more!

Could you tell us a bit about how you began your musical journey, and your background in music?

I stumbled into music through a random kid challenging me to rap battle him on COD. I was 16 at the time and had flunked music classes up until that point, so it was almost like I’d stumbled on a mini superpower when I realised I could freestyle.

What is your new single Overthinking about?

It’s about the internal push/pull that I experience between prioritising my relationships or my art. Being this focused on my craft has really impacted a lot of my relationships, I put my art over everything but I always question whether it's the right thing to do or not. That's how Overthinking came to be.

The song brings a new melodic vibe for you, what inspired that take for the track?

I had split with my ex & was stuck analysing my decisions and priorities in life. I needed to create something but I truly wasn’t feeling my normal self, so when I tried to rap like I normally do I just couldn’t. This melodic side was born out of the necessity to create but the inability to rely on my previous steez.

Is there a line from the song that you find at times could be stuck in your head?

“I’d rather get the cash then to fall in love”

Fax.

Are there any messages you hope listeners take away from the song?

Relatability. I know a lot of people struggle with these thoughts and struggle with relationships in general. I want people to relate to this song and make their own decision on what they need to prioritise more in their life right now.

How did the concept for the music video come about?

IDK, Supernatural/Josh Davis (the director) is just a genius. We hit a discord call & just made it happen.

What’s your creative process when writing and recording your music?

Press record, Freestyle, stop recording.

If it’s trash, delete and restart, if not keep it and repeat.

I’m a weirdo in the studio, I’m very hit or miss, sometimes I one take a song completely off the top, sometimes I need to sit down and properly write and analyze if freestyling isn’t cutting it.

What can audiences expect from your performances at FALLS Festival and Spilt Milk?

MANIA. We are going to go stupid.

What’s in store for you for 2023?

I can’t really say exactly but it rhymes with Malcolm.

What’s your favourite meme?

Evil Vile Goblin meme, shout out my dawg @largetrap on IG.
