Melbourne artist NYNE has unveiled her sophomore EP, Season Two. We caught up with the singer to unpack the release and so much more!
Could you tell us a bit about your musical journey thus far, and what drew you towards this path?
I honestly only pushed myself to go to a studio because I was terrified ! I loved music & writing but I was so scared to let anyone hear my voice. I hated being scared and didn’t want to run from anything
Your new EP Season 2 has arrived and serves as a documentation of moments and events within your own life. Can you unpack the themes explored across the release and the importance to you in documenting them within your music?
This one did feel a little darker sonically and maybe a little lyrically! Lyrically it is about scattered moments not really any one event. For the next one you will probably hear more obvious themes
How have you gone about crafting the EP’s captivating dark-pop-meets-R&B sonic realm?
This one did take longer to make! Some of the songs were reworked a couple times.
Sometimes you need to give things a little room and time to breathe so the pieces can come together
Which song from the EP would you play to someone who had never heard your music that you think would make them an instant die-hard fan and why?
Depends what the vibe is 😈 if they were into R&B I’d probably play Mission and if they were a pop fan I’d have to show them Dangerous
Is there a particular production line, lyric or musical motif from the EP that you find gets stuck in your head, or one that you’re most proud of?
I have two lines that really stick out to me 1: Dangerous - “Know I should forget you pretend I never met you," It’s only simple but that section really made me excited about the song
2: Expectations - “God knows I’m patient but whoever had a good time waiting“ again, so simple but was just felt it at the time.
You made your debut through sharing your music on Soundcloud. How has your artistry and approach to creating evolved from those earlier days into what we hear on Season 2?
I’m more confident. I think if you listened to one of my first songs “private show” to any track off season 2 you’d hear my voice is more sure of itself.
You enlisted producers Hamley, Hieloways, T.Clark and GXNXVS across the EP. What drew you to working with them and what do you think they brought to their respective tracks?
Hamley & GXNXVS were both on my first EP. I'm a massive fan and it only felt right to have them on this one as well, we’re all influenced by similar things so it’s easy to be on the same page. T.Clark just happened very organically. We've been following each other for a long time so it felt good to have this one done together. Last but definitely not least Hieloways !!!! I don’t know if they own a time machine or something because they understand the 80’s sound a little too well. The layers that they create are gorgeous
You provided the vocal hook and inspiration for Sevn Thomas’ (Rhianna, Travis Scott) breakout single, Can’t Sleep Alone, and became the first Australian artist to be associated with Drake’s hip-hop and production outfit, OVO. What impact and influence do you think this had on your career moving forward?
Obviously Sevn Thomas is an insanely gifted producer so I felt blessed he even got what I was trying to do. I think it gave me confidence in my ability moving forward
Will fans be able to catch any live shows in the near-future? And what can we expect from a NYNE performance?
I hope so !!!!!!!! I can’t wait too get back on the road
