Rising trio, Telenova have delivered their hotly-anticipated debut album, Time Is A Flower. To celebrate the release, the band are taking us along for the ride of their recent tour with an exclusive photo diary.
“When we first started, we thought we were making the sort of music people just sit down and listen to on headphones, but it quickly became obvious that it was more visceral than that,” says lead singer Angeline Armstrong. “Yes, they’re not traditional dance songs but there’s something about them that feels transcendent,” she continues. “There’s so much introspection and thought gone into this record but the message is never just ‘it’s a dark, broken world out there’,” she explains. “Making this album was cathartic,” she adds. “And onstage sharing it with an audience, I think that’s where it really comes alive.”
Over the weekend, the band kicked off their Australian tour in Frankston and Ballarat. The run of shows will continue on to the Gold Coast, Byron Bay, Kings Beach and Castlemaine, before wrapping up in Torquay on August 31. Tickets are on sale now!
Ange: One of the last shows EVER at iconic Brisbane venue, The Zoo. There was this raised catwalk platform at the front (where the fold back wedges usually sit) that I got to enjoy strutting back and forth on. Also we love a trip to Fortitude Valley - it gets a bad wrap sometimes but honestly I don’t think we have a singular main street in Melbourne that captures the energy and anticipation of a great night out as perfectly as the valley. Mind you I’m talking 9pm in the valley, not sure the vibe is quite the same at 1am…
Ange: Airbnb’s can be a bit hit and miss for us on the road but this one was fit for some little superstars like us. Appreciate the design aesthetic of the pillow on the left and also meant I got to do my favourite post-show ritual (read in a book in the bath).
Ange: Wearing my signature ‘water wings’ on stage (as the Telenova boys call them). But seriously I do love how these silky sleaves kind of elevate any outfit in my wardrobe - on tour without a stylist (maybe one day) its hard to change up the outfits every night! So I like having a bit of a uniform I guess. I like that the sleeves bring things into a bit of a gothic romantic realm. They’re kinda angel core.
Ange: Ah and now for the perfect pre-show ritual. A pool to swim in at our Airbnbs is a rare but welcomed bonus. Honestly our Airbnbs aren’t usually as bougie as this. Also the pool lights changed all colours of the rainbow over a period of 5minutes which was trippy. Felt like i was swimming in a rainbow.
Ed: The great Milo Eastwood. He opened for us on this tour and it was an absolute delight. He’s been a champion of Telenova since our first EP, so most shows we’d see him side of stage singing all the lyrics. Great DJ and GREAT energy.
Ed: I remember this show vividly because the crowd were nice and rowdy. It’s not uncommon to look into the audience and see crowd members singing the lyrics, but I distinctly recall looking up during DISCOTEQUE (which hadn’t been released yet) and somehow one bloke was singing all the words. I’m still at a loss as to how he knew the lyrics?
Ed: Josh and I look about as awkward as we felt on those filthy stairs. Ange is being a consummate professional, as always. I’m not great with candid photos pre show because I’m usually panicking about all the computer stuff messing up - and I think that’s quite clearly on display with the facial expression I’m pulling. Nice photographer though.
Josh: Classic rock shot, me behind Angeline, one of the two blurry guys in the background Nice to see the flowers representing the album in the top left corner, tambourine ready for action too. I remember this being a special show, Brisbane brought the heat.
Ed: This has been quite an Ange-heavy collection of photos so I’m going to focus in on the real star of the show here -Jameson. You may think there are TWO Jameson on our rider form this pic, but alas, that’s actually the reflection of ONE Jameson. Makes you think.
Josh: I’m deep in concentration trying to hit all the difficult backing vocals, it’s hard harmonising with a singer who’s range is completely different to this old crooner! Ange rocking the water wings, it’s a big look.
Josh: A nice shot of our drummer Beaz (aka Cheesley). He’s been a legend since joining the band, it’s really elevated things to another level, I felt a lot of rock n roll guilt when we used to play with drums in the backing track.
Josh: The swag collection, my favourite item in this collection is the lyric book, Ange and I worked our little butts off writing the lyrics for Time Is A Flower, it may be the hardest part of the songwriting process and it’s nice to have them celebrated in one place. I have a rule to never wear my own bands merch, I saw Jason Newsted playing live with Metallica in one of their shirts and it put me off for life.
