PHOTO DIARY: ON THE ROAD WITH SPUTNIK SWEETHEART

Lindy Hop is out now!

Canberra-based indie punk-rock outfit Sputnik Sweetheart are back with their new single, Lindy Hop. To celebrate the release, the band are taking MILKY behind the scenes of their recent tour, and we're bringing you along!

“I wrote a lot of the lyrics for Lindy Hop around 4 years ago during the marriage equality plebiscite, and at the time I was in a relatively new relationship and that was really exciting and beautiful,” vocalist Nette France shares.

“But it was also a stressful, chaotic time to navigate because we were both processing the influx of homophobia around us. Part of ‘Lindy Hop’ is all about the joys of falling in love and the intense honeymoon period. Another part is all about the total frustration and disappointment I felt towards the people that led us to such divisiveness."

TRIP TO MORNINGTON

During our time in Victoria, we took a trip to Morning Peninsula. We arrived sometime in the afternoon and headed straight to the Cape Schanck lookout. There’s a long boardwalk you can follow down to one of the beaches, incredible views the whole way down. It was super windy, and we ended up getting absolutely drenched on the way back up. We all couldn’t stop laughing running up the boardwalk, it was quite an experience. Definitely one of the best days of the tour.

REHEARSAL AT BAKEHOUSE

Bakehouse Studios is our favourite rehearsal studio in Melbourne! We’ve been there a few times now and it’s such a beautiful space. Would definitely recommend to any artists coming through Melbourne and looking for a spot to jam or rehearse.

HEADLINE SHOW AT THE TOTE

Our last show of the tour was at The Tote Hotel in Collingwood. Such an iconic venue, it’s super fun to play and you always get a few passer-by’s who weren’t sure what to do with their night and end up sticking around for the show. We played with local legends Psychobabel and Jothi who were both superb.

FITZROY MILLS ROOFTOP

During one of the days in Melbourne we wondered up to the Fitzroy Mills rooftop. There are some nice markets there on Saturdays, definitely worth a visit if you have the time. Last time we were there we grabbed breakfast and Zac got himself a new jacket.

JOE IN FRONT OF SPACESHIP HOUSE

During the tour we had a few days set aside to work on some upcoming projects. This picture of Joe was taken out the front of this insane house we went to. It looks very much like a spaceship from the outside and something else entirely on the inside... That’s all we can say for now!! But, we’re super excited to share it with everyone soon.

BRISBANE WITH SURF TRASH

We played two shows with Surf Trash up in Brisbane and this picture was taken at the Tomcat for the all-ages show. It was such a fun afternoon, minus the part where Nette fell over on stage… We usually all bounce around a fair bit so it was probably bound to happen sooner or later. Brissy was loads of fun, we can’t wait to go back.

NETTE AND JOE SEE HK AT THE FORM

On one of the nights between shows, Joe and Nette went to catch Hiatus Kaiyote at the Forum in Melbourne. Nette picked up a Paul Bender record that night and she hasn’t stopped talking about it. The forum is such a beautiful venue, we’d love to play there one day.

CAPE SCHANCK LIGHTHOUSE

Before getting drenched, we took a photo at the Cape Schanck lighthouse. The Lindy Hop tour was an absolute blast, we can’t wait to hit the road again and share some of the new stuff we’ve been working on.
