Beloved songwriter, instrumentalist and Pond-frontman Nicholas Allbrook has shared his fourth solo record Manganese. We caught up with the musician to chat about the album, his artistry, using music to process the movements of life and so much more.
For his fourth solo outing, Allbrook retains the whimsical enigmatic quality present in his first three records, whilst leaning into 80's Oz-rock sonic territory. Co-produced by Allbrook and HOKO (Nathaniel Hoho), glimmering soundscapes unfurl beneath the musicians charismatic and inimitable performance as he unpacks the human experience in all its glory and trauma.
The juxtaposition of the light and shade found within life as you grow older is expertly captured by Allbrook, who uses the body of work as a vehicle to document his observations on death, despair, hope and joy. Introspective and reflective lyricism flow across the album, allowing Allbrook the space to process the changes around him and use his music as a therapeutic tool to speak to people in a less direct manner. In doing so, the musician has presented a body of work that can push through to make a sincere connection with audiences, fuelled by inviting and honest music.
Allbrook is currently in the midst of his national tour, having kicked off the run of shows in Sydney last night following a performance in Perth last week supporting Weyes Blood. The musician will take to the stage in Melbourne tonight and Brisbane this Friday. before appearing at Strange Festival in Perth on June 18. Allbrook is set to head to North America next month for headline performances in Brooklyn and Los Angeles.
