Our March Book Club pick is Trisha Sakhlecha’s The Inheritance.

The Inheritance is a book that will have you repeating the word “wow” for about ten minutes straight. When I tell you there was the twistiest twist of twists within this book, you have to read it to believe me. Reflecting on it now, I realise it was all right there, in front of you, and the author pulls off some brilliant misdirection because it takes you by surprise.

The structure of the narrative is so well executed that I found myself thinking at the end, it all makes sense. I kept saying, “what a way to frame it, what a way to do it.” That being, the story. It was giving Succession, How To Get Away with Murder, The Residence and the Knives Out series. I especially loved the level of detail when it comes to the complexities of characters in each storyline. It was subtle to begin with, and then it came together in the end. I have to say, Sakhlecha really knows how to flip a switch.

I felt certain ways about particular characters, but as you travel through the book you develop understanding that you discover alongside the overarching mystery itself. At times I felt myself contemplating situations, possible outcomes as well as the meaning behind the title itself. The dynamics between the characters and who they are interacting with was really well constructed. Not just their own personas, but the relationship between concepts such as money and power.

You really come to understand the complexities behind the development of the story. And I would love to gain some insight into the evolution of the development of this book. Sakhlecha really excelled when it came to perspective and this relates to the language she uses for each character. There is a distinct difference that evolves throughout the text, creating a sense of who they are by how they speak. This was a standout element within this book and I’m looking forward to exploring more within this genre.

Trisha Sakhlecha’s The Inheritance is available through Penguin Books Australia.
