To quote a classic, “no matter what people tell you, words and ideas can change the world” - Dead Poets Society. So in that breath, we are proud to introduce the MILKY Book Club. Our first selection is the record shattering memoir ‘The Woman In Me’ by global phenomenon, Britney Spears.

The Woman in Me is a reflection on the endurance, strength and power behind a powerhouse of a woman, Britney Spears.

The singer has curated a work that is both a cathartic examination, as well as something that seems like it could be a type of self therapy - analysing and reflecting on years of injustices brought forth from family, the media and society. The Woman in Me is Spears finding her voice again, a voice that many tried to diminish. It is also about her power as a woman, a mother, a creative and a human being.

Themes that really spoke to me as a reader were her wanting of safety throughout her life, that in an effort to protect her children and create the safety she wanted in life, she would come to sacrifice so much. Another being, the positive impact and connection she has with her fans. There is something quite profound about Spears’ contemplation on the effect her fans had on her life. Ultimately The Woman in Me feels unlike any memoir I’ve read before. The star brings her fans into her world with detailed ruminations on pivotal moments in her life. At times it was an emotional, difficult read as Spears’ brutal honesty shines a light on situations that highlight the depth of her strength, perseverance and confidence.

Excerpt from The Woman in Me by Britney Spears. “It took a long time and a lot of work for me to feel ready to tell my story. I hope it inspires people on some level and can touch hearts. Since I've been free, I've had to construct a whole different identity. I've had to say, Wait a second, this is who I was—-someone passive and pleasing. A girl. And this is who I am now—-someone strong and confident. A woman. The Woman in Me (pg. 274) by Britney Spears
