Watch our interview with LOVER below!
Sydney musician LOVER recently unveiled his shimmering sophomore EP, Rookie Era. The musical project of Oliver Kirby, we caught up with the musician to chat about the release and so much more!
Reflective and optimistic, the release documents a twelve month period of the musicians life, capturing the ebbs and flow of life sonically by meandering between distorted moments that clash with soft acoustic instrumentals. On Wow, Kirby introduces sounds inspired by 2000’s indie rock, simmering beneath distorted vocals that showcases his vocal range, with his performance comparable to American musician Gus Dapperton. Palm Reader continues the musicians exploration of alt-pop sonics, exisiting within a lush and atmospheric soundscape playing out below the musicians a more dreamy vocal performance.
The textural Pushing Daisies sees the musician implement more considered vocal layering, whilst exploring mortality and our conceived ideas surrounding death. The EP is rounded out by Close Your Eyes and Forever, with the latter receiving production from Les Priest (LANY) and Sam Gidley (October Tooth) and arriving alongside an official visual. Created by LOVER and collaborator Jayemol, the stop-motion clip is comprised of hundreds of scans of stills depicting the musician performing the song within a dark space.
Making his debut in 2018 with Eagle to the Prey, Kirby is no stranger to the industry, having been a founding member of Australian pop-rock band Little Sea. LOVER sees the musician take centre stage, having shared his debut EP, It's A Wild World, last year. The release saw him team up with the likes of Golden Vessel and Cult Shφtta, and set the scene for the sonic and lyrical growth we hear on Rookie Era.
