Sydney-based alt-pop producer and singer-songwriter CYRUS has today unveiled his debut EP, had, lost. Featuring the single Love Online, we caught up with the musician to chat about the release, his production work, writing in Japan and so much more!
With three years since his last release, had, lost reintroduces us to CYRUS and offers up a multi-faceted exploration of a tarnished relationship that meets its demise. Self-produced by the musician, he intricately weaves together sonic threads of post-dub electronica, hip-hop and bedroom-R&B, with each track showcasing the singers introspective and relatable lyricism.
Meandering between bright and brooding sonic palettes, CYRUS offers up a more refined approach to creating on the EP and exhibits the power and control he has on his vocals. Moments of floating falsetto are laced throughout, mixed in with angst-ridden and textural.
Written in the aftermath of a long-term relationship, CYRUS began working on what would become his debut EP whilst on a trip to Japan, alongside frequent collaborator Ned Houston. Performing shows across the city, the musician found himself sitting at a piano in an underground bar only only weeks after a breakup, where he and Houston penned Eyes Open and began the conceptual exploration of the EP.
Over the past three years, The X-Factor Australia winner has built his name within the production realm, having worked with the likes of Client Liaison, CXLOE, Glades. Alongside the release of had, lost, the singer has shared the visual for A380, directed by Ben Develin.
