Arnhem Land rock outfit Wildfire Manwurrk have dropped their new single, Don't Smoke. To celebrate the release, the four-piece have shared with MILKY ten facts about themselves they everyone should know.

“I wanted to write a hard punk rock song with a strong message to community people and parents. I saw my Aunty smoking near my nephew and I see that everywhere, people smoking near children. Don’t Smoke is a message to look after our children because they are our future, our important young leaders for the next generation.” band member Sires Rostron shares of the track.

ONE

Our Dad Victor once swam with a crocodile, on purpose. He went collecting croc eggs as part of a Ranger research project and had to swim across the water all the way to the opposite bank to the nest. He was working with his Mentor and they only had a boat paddle to protect themselves. They got the croc eggs safely even with the crocodile following them the whole way.

TWO

We are some of the last living speakers of Kune language. Kune language is from Stone Country in Central Western Arnhem Land.

THREE

Our family loves to play heavy metal music and use it as a new way to explain what’s still happening on our country and in our lives to bring awareness to the urgencies our people and culture are facing.

FOUR

We are all from one family including father, sons and nephew.

FIVE

We’re all self-taught musicians and play multiple instruments and sing.

SIX

Our family are the traditional owners of a ceremony called Mimih. Mimih’s are creation spirits. They are depicted in rock art painting dating back as far as 50,000 years ago in Arnhem Land.

SEVEN

Victor taught himself how to speak and write in English.

EIGHT

On our country, we have rock art that is thousands and thousands of years old. People are still are painting, still walking on that land. Rock art, like music is another way to tell stories and keep a record of history.

NINE

Everyone in the band speaks more than five Aboriginal languages.

TEN

The first time we ever left the NT was to record our debut EP ‘The Next Future’.
