New Zealand-based musician Leaping Tiger has unveiled his new album, Soulsleep. To celebrate the release, the singer has shared with MILKY five things he learnt whilst making the record!
Speaking of the release, the musician details: "Soulsleep is my take on dreampop, for this album I wanted to do something different from my first one which was all about showcasing what I can do as a producer whereas Soulsleep is me trying to just create a liner feeling and vibe.
I guess you could say its a concept album as there's a central theme of romantic relationships or the experiences surrounding those relationships ‘Figure it out’ is when you’re in the thick of it and you’d do anything for the person you’re with, Take Care is when you still feel strongly about someone but they don’t feel the same way, Gooey is post break-up when you thought you’ve moved on but jealousy creeps in. The album is about these experiences at the end of the day.
For this album I wanted it to have a really strong sonic identity so I limited myself to certain sounds and synths to keep every song consistent across the board, so one track may be a different genre from the last but it still retains the same feeling because I’m using the same sounds."
Here are five things Leaping Tiger learnt whilst making Soulsleep...
ONE
I learnt how to be patient, with this being my second album I was pretty terrified of the "sophomore slump" and whether I'd be able to even make another album but just learning to be patient and allowing it to come naturally instead of forcing it was all I had to do.
TWO
It was my first time ever singing and writing lyrics on this album so that was a really interesting skill set to learn. I'm still an absolute rookie when it comes to writing lyrics and I'm still figuring out how to use my voice but now it feels like I've pulled the lynchpin and can just dive headfirst into this new world of songwriting and explore it for all its got.
THREE
I learnt a lot about love while making this album. I was in my first sort of serious relationship while making Soulsleep and learning how to break up, make up, and move on for the first time in my life informed so much of my writing process. Pretty much the character arc I went through in real life is reflected in the songs Figure It Out, Take Care, Gooey, and *Pain.
FOUR
I learnt to just trust my gut when being creative. Self-doubt can play a major part in any creative person, while I was making Soulsleep I was definitely questioning whether anybody would get what I'm going for or even if it was any good. But finally getting the singles out and seeing the reaction to them made me realise you just have to trust your gut and you'll always be right.
FIVE
I also learnt how to make a fire Shrimp Scampi, the recipe of which I will take to the grave...
