Sydney songwriter and performer Bobby Uncle unveiled his new EP, Mimes Miss The Beach. To celebrate the release, the musician has shared with MILKY five artists that inspired the collection of songs.
LAUV
Lauv has been a longtime inspiration throughout my music career. He has a minimalistic approach in his production style and is an expert in blending synth elements with his vocals. His falsetto is unmatched at times, especially when watching him live and he always finds a way to include it in each of his songs to perfection. Many of the stylistic choices in my vocals have been inspired or derived from many of Lauv’s earlier works and some of his recent stuff from his 2023 album. Lauv no doubt will continue to be a big inspiration towards my love for pop music.
HARRY STYLES
I am never embarrassed to say that I am a big Harry Styles fan. Each album is filled with extremely catchy melodies and very well produced tracks. Most of the time, it is his producers work in the instrumentals that I focus more on with songs like Golden and Adore You having strong bass lines that drives the groove of the track. This no doubt was a big inspiration for bass grooves in songs like Pendulum, Coffee and Summertime (Make It Happen). Though Harry Styles falsetto is nowhere near as masterful as Lauv’s, he still makes use of it in only the most appropriate of places in his songs and is the perfect example of knowing what his range is and using it perfectly. Something that I have appreciated when recording the vocals for my songs.
DARYL HALL & JOHN OATES
These gentlemen were introduced to me through my mother as ‘Hall & Oates’. Their songs represent the stereotypical American anthems such as You Make My Dreams Come True or Maneater. They’re nostalgic and I can live through their era through my parents who express how exciting and fun the 1980s were with their music blasting through the radio. That same energy and nostalgia were instrumental to songs like Mimes Miss The Beach, Coffee, Summertime and The Way You Stand in the hopes of expressing similar excitement and energy in modern listeners.
COLDPLAY
Coldplay always receive heat for being too generic, but their music is undoubtedly some of the best in the industry with iconic songs like Viva La Vida and Sky Full of Stars that span a career over three decades. They are still massively relevant and selling out the biggest arenas in the world for a reason. Their songs are infectious to audiences and each song feels like you are in a crowd of people singing along. The production of their songs makes the chorus feel huge completely invading your body in the best way possible. I only hope to replicate a small fraction of this vibe in listeners who listen to songs like Tragedy Delight, Summertime, The Way You Stand, hoping that they feel the same way.
THE JUNGLE GIANTS
The Jungle Giants are without a doubt the best band to come out of the 2010s era of Australian Indie. Being exposed to them from childhood with their song appearing on FIFA 14, the band’s music feels me with nostalgia of a more innocent time in my life. Their music helps emphasise that feeling with its playful, childish, danceable and fun songs, all of them exuding the spirit of Australian summer. I could put them on anywhere in the world, and if there is a beach nearby and the sun is out and about, I think any person would have a knee jerk reaction as their muscles react in joy while listening to their summer melodies. This was for sure the biggest inspiration in Summertime (Make It Happen) and Mimes Miss The Beach to replicate that childish, innocent joy you had when summer was around, eating ice cream and surfing at the beach.
