Our January Book Club pick is Jenna Lo Bianco’s Venetian Lessons In Love.
Venetian Lessons in Love is a captivating romantic novel that completely transports you. It’s as if you’re taking a vacation not just into a story, but also the location itself. There is an old world charm about this book, it creates scenes that evoke a nostalgic feel, yet it’s set in present time.
I loved the fact it seems to be written in the style of an old school Italian romantic drama, fusing together some lighthearted funny moments with realities in life - especially due to the way that the scenes are set and the wording that is used. With visceral scenes creating an enigmatic tableau through the little slice of life descriptions from start to finish. There’s so much that is packed into these scenes and ultimately it creates the lifestyle, and sets the scene for what to expect or what you would also see in your everyday life. This was really well achieved.
The descriptions are so palpable, you feel like you’re there. The use of duel perspectives within each chapter contribute to this. There is something about the way scenes are set, and woven together that is quite compelling.
I was completely enamoured by the connections between the characters in this book and found myself contemplating both the situations and possible outcomes between each chapter. This was the ultimate postcard from Venice.
Jenna Lo Bianco’s Venetian Lessons In Love is available through Pan Macmillan Australia.
