Indie-rock four-piece DICE recently unveiled their new single, Double Espresso. To celebrate the release, band members Ben Hodgey and Caspar Chernov have taken us behind-the-song and unpacked the conceptual inspiration for the track.
The sun-soaked track sees the band team up with Sam Ford at Tone City Recording Studio (Psychedelic Porn Crumpets, POND & Abbe May), as they explore the impact of keeping a partying lifestyle amidst the gruelling nature of touring.
DICE will return to the stage at Mojo’s Bar in Fremantle on February 18 to launch their new single, with tickets on sale now.
"I think it’s safe to say the four of us went through a few strenuous months of working during the day and playing the nights of every weekend. Although the early morning wake ups to make coffee provided a bit of caffeine, we found it quite challenging to find the energy to stay awake for consecutive nights. There was a period from the start of August through to the end of December where we pretty much had 1 or 2 weekends off gigging which definitely got us into a cycle of staying out late playing shows, getting up early for work and repeating the process week in, week out." shares frontman Ben Hodgey.
He continues, "We were privileged to be invited to support our mates Ra Ra Viper, down south in Margaret River at a venue called the River. The night before we also played one of our biggest shows to date supporting Coterie at Freo social. The unfortunate combination of a late night and work early in the morning meant we were zombies when driving down south so we sought the cure of caffeine to keep us awake, however what started as a fun down south gig led to a morning of no sleep and regret."
Guitarist Caspar Chernov adds, "It’s not uncommon to be working early in the morning and rehearsing late at night, closely followed with a weekend full of gigs so sleep is sometimes hard to come by. Similar to coffee orders I’ve also recently begun exploring other alcoholic drinks that include caffeine. I try to stay away from energy drinks so espresso martini’s have proven to be a saviour for late night gigs on no sleep."
