Naarm/Melbourne-based indie rock outfit The Velvet Club have dropped their new single, On Your Own, ahead of their appearance at Splendour In The Grass this weekend. To celebrate the release, the band sat down to chat about their Splendour experiences, joining this years lineup and more!
‘Lyrically On Your Own touches on anxiety, in particular getting on top of it and figuring out what helps you to deal with it as opposed to ignoring it and hoping for it to resolve itself,” AJ explains.
“The song came together really quickly and a lot of the parts from the original demo made it all the way through to the final cut. All of the lyrics are pretty much exactly as they were from the first draft too. This song just had a really good feeling to it from the start. We’ve also been opening our shows with it for the last 6 months so if you’ve seen us live before you might recognise it!”
Following their set at Splendour, the band will perform at Grooveland Festival in Perth on July 29 and Icebreaker Festival in Sydney on August 20.
Tom: How many Splendours have you been to?
Sam: Two
Tom: Which year was your fave?
Sam: 2017 over 2022, but that’ mostly a weather based answer
AJ: Which artist or band at Splendour in the Grass are you most excited to see this year, and why?
Tom: King Gizzard. I saw them 6 months ago but they probably have like 20 new albums since then.
Sam: If you could collaborate with any artist or band performing at Splendour in the Grass, who would it be and why?
AJ: Old Mervs. We’d just use their songs because they’re great but we’d add 3 more guitarists to them!
Macca: Who was the first person you told when you found out you’re playing SITG this year?
Tom: I called my Dad cause he’s my boss and I needed time off work.
Sam: What has been your craziest SITG moment?
AJ: I missed Flume Headline to apparently the biggest main stage crowd ever at splendour cause I was doing karaoke with a couple friends in a little tent somewhere haha. There weren't many other people in there.
AJ: What about your craziest general festival moment of all time?
Sam: I went to a festival in Florida last year. I reckon that’s all I need to say!
Sam: Band member most likely to get lost?
Everyone: Macca he’s no good with directions.
On Your Own is out now!
