Fix Yourself, Not The World is out now!
English indie rockers The Wombats have treated the world with their superb fifth studio album, Fix Yourself, Not The World. We caught up with frontman Matthew Murphy to unpack the record, the albums visual identity and their upcoming Australian tour!
Recorded during the pandemic, the album sonically pushes the boundaries of what we've come to expect from The Wombats, sonically weaving in textural threads of modern pop, synth-rock, R&B, funk and disco within the bands signature indie-rock and new wave sonic exploration. Fix Yourself, Not The World really has it all, but never feels forced. Each sonic decision feels considered and captures what it is to be a modern music lover: never confining yourself to one genre. If we as consumers can love Taylor Swift and Metallica, why can't The Wombats experiment with their sound?
The introspective body of work takes listeners on an over arching journey to acceptance of yourself and the events of life, and finding joy and solace within being present within our own lives. There's a sense of reconciliation present on the album, reconciling with ourselves and our choices, and coming to the realisation that positivity and optimism hold greater currency than dwelling and negativity.
The creation of If You Ever Leave, I’m Coming With You saw the trio undertake a new approach to their creative process, recording the record remotely from their respective homes. With Murphy based in Los Angeles, bassist Tord Øverland Knudsen in Oslo and drummer Dan Haggis in London, the trio recorded their individual parts before sending them off to the albums producers, Jacknife Lee (U2, The Killers), Gabe Simon (Dua Lipa, Lana Del Rey), Paul Meaney (Twenty One Pilots, Nothing But Thieves) and Mark Crew (Bastille, Rag‘n’Bone Man).
Kicking off in Perth on June 5 next year, the run of shows will continue on to Hobart, Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Canberra, before wrapping up in Brisbane on June 17. The seven date headline tour is a welcomed return to Aussie stages for the trio, with tickets on sale now!
