Last month, Australian music legend Ben Gillies released his debut solo single, Breathe In, Breathe Out. The abstract song expands and contracts, with soothing melodies on a subtly crafted anthem for our times. On the track, Gillies combines contemporary sounds with classic 70’s rock moments, creating his own unique soundscape that takes influence from the music he grew up listening to. Gillies’ musical foundation is set from 70’s rock music, discovering bands as a child by sifting through his fathers vinyl collection. Through experimentation, the musician found himself at this new sonic soundscape.
One of the founding members of iconic Aussie band Silverchair, the musician formed Tambalane in 2003 with Australian Idol winner Wes Carr, during Silverchair’s hiatus in 2002. In 2012, Gillies formed the band Bento, taking on the role of frontman. Breathe In, Breathe Out marks the Silverchair drummers first release as a purely solo artist. Having worked on his upcoming collection of songs over the past five years, Gillies explored the multi-faceted sides of his own musicianship, resulting in the sounds presented on his debut single. Drawing on his past experiences and personal love for performing, Gillies is set to bring his world-class musicianship to the forefront. His main collaborator on the body of work is Australian producer, Jordan Power. The two met at a rehearsal for a charity performance Gillies was slated to perform. The pair push and challenge each other creatively, with Power assisting Gillies in venturing outside of his comfort zone.
Having toured the world over, the musician is hoping to shift gears when he takes these new songs on the road. After playing sold-out stadiums with Silverchair, Gillies plans to start touring using the platform Parlour, a touring company which hosts gigs in the audiences own backyards. The platform allows fans to organise independent shows at their own homes with their favourite artists. The artist can set their specific audience number and if fans can secure the attendance, you’ve got a gig! The intimate nature of the performance will give Gillies the opportunity to authentically connect and interact with his fans in a new and exciting way. Whilst no official plans are in place, Gillies hopes to undertake the tour next year. Fans can subscribe to the musicians official website to be the first to hear any news on the tour.
