Meanjin/Brisbane-based psychedelic outfit Dream Dali have unveiled their debut album, Letters From The Light. To celebrate the release, frontman Aldous Emerson has shared with MILKY five things he learnt whilst creating the body of work.
"This album is a cumulative effort of passion from over five years of work. Whilst some of the songs have been created within the last year in an impulsive and instinctive manner, this album represents the essence of Dream Dali and what we have worked towards conceptually within the last few years." Emerson shares.
"The songs on this album represent a deep dive and exploration into the subconscious and at the same time experimenting with the impulsive and instinctual nature of creative freedom without judgement. Letters From The Light can be a book, a thought, a hope, a sudden sadness, bit overall a genuine attempt at real feelings and expression”
ALLOW YOURSELF TO HAVE NO EXPECTATIONS WHEN CREATING
A lot of people can get caught up in making a song a single or sound like something contemporary. I find the more this is thought, then the more stress is created, which is counter productive to creativity. I believe the key is to “play” like children do with toys, and allow the songs and ideas to form. The best songs have come by allowing random things to happen, instead of choking it with expectations.
LET THE SONGS WRITE THEMSELVES
Sometimes I can have a concept but a lot of the time I like to let the song take it’s own journey. Particularly with lyrics. I like to hum a melody and random words, and I find the song will start to write itself, as a theme appears from the sub conscious.
TRY NEW SOUNDS
I like to pull up new guitar sounds, synth patches or plug ins I’ve never used to explore. I’ve written many songs from a new patch that inspires a whole new sound for me. It’s also a good way to add to your inventory of sounds for the future.
GET INSPIRED BEFORE WRITING
If I feel a bit flat or don’t know where to start, I will listen to songs that inspire me that I love. It can help to get your head into the right place before writing. It’s like warming up before a r
MAKE AN INSPIRATION PLAYLIST
During writing this album I chose which music I wanted to soak into my brain. I didn’t listen to much else than my curated list. This may be a bad thing but I had a distinct idea of the sound I wanted for this album, in particular dark 80’s reverbed sonics.
By exclusively exposing and immersing my brain to these sounds I was able to study the sounds from a producer and song writer point of view.
