American musician Cassandra Jenkins has released her new album, My Light, My Destroyer. To celebrate the release, the singer has unpacked her five favourite constellations for MILKY.
“My Light, My Destroyer stems from a place of insatiable curiosity. If ‘An Overview…’ showed me how to bend, ‘My Light…’ helped me break open, with a magnifying glass and a telescope in tow. It is a product of frustration and discovery and a writing process that at times resembled scientific method. At times language failed, and I allowed music to step in to fill the gaps. I surrounded myself with everything I love, let myself feel invigorated and challenged by it, until I finally began to love something of my own creation.”
ARIES
I’m a proud Aries baby - was born April 13th, on a full moon night, Friday the 13th!
CONSTELLATION ORION
I’ve fallen in love with this constellation ever since my mom pointed out the brightest star, Betelgeuse. I had never appreciated it before. It was a gateway star for me – I’ve become obsessed with cosmology and studying the night sky ever since she pointed it out to me!
THE PLEIADES
I saw a planetarium show about Indigenous sky watching by Samantha Doxtator, Haudenosaunee, Oneida (Wolf Clan). She explained her clan's origin stories and how they're interwoven with stargazing. The Pleiades represent an astronomical entryway, aka the gateway between the earth and the skyworld. Their presence in the night sky also serves as part of a navigation system and to guide when it's time to plant and harvest & have certain ceremonies.
THE BIG DIPPER
It wasn’t until I was in Australia, traveling through the Blue Mountains, when I realized that I had never seen that side of the night sky. I was looking for the Big Dipper, and it was nowhere to be found. Such a humbling moment.
CASSIOPEIA
This one might be obvious at first sight, because it’s a name that’s followed me around my whole life– that and Casserole– but then I found it contains the Heart Nebula, and I was immediately in love.
