Meanjin/Brisbane-based band First Beige recently unveiled their long-awaited debut album Doplar. To celebrate the release, the six-piece have shared with MILKY 10 tracks that inspired them throughout the albums creation.
"Doplar feels like quite an expansive record in terms of songwriting and also lyrically. We never intended to go into the recording process with a super strong concept for the album as a whole. We were guided by the process, trusting in our ways of working and our taste to keep the music cohesive. We knew it had to be a very dynamic record. What we’ve learned from playing shows is that energy is everything and we like to keep things fresh and moving all the time; not only for the audience but for our own morale as a band." the band share of the album
MARA TK - BAD MEDITATION
This track was rinsed through the course of making the album, a huge fan of Mara TK’s smooth vocal and effortless phrasing.
MOUNT KIMBIE – MARILYN
Really love the lo-fi edge and simplicity of this song, it has such a sweet and sentimental feel to it.
NU GUINEA – DISCO SOLE
Obsessed with the infectious groove of this song. Was a big inspo in the instrumental realm and really wanted to channel the live feel of it on the record.
GWEN GUTHRIE – PADLOCK (LARRY LEVAN MIX)
Huge feel-good boogie! Has been the soundtrack of many a margarita. Such a nostalgia inducing tune as well. Love the production with all the live (and slightly wonky ) dubs. Bassline really sings on this one.
KASSIN – RELAX
Cruisin Tune. Energy builds so nicely throughout and everything has it’s time to shine even with so much going on. Sounds like a holiday.
FLOATING POINTS – BIAS (MAYFIELD DEPOT MIX)
This one’s a bit (lot) on the more hectic side but the Floating Points live show is on truly in a league of its own and has been a huge inspo both sonically and visually. The energy captured in this live recording is insane. One of the great artists of our time for sure.
TIM DELUXE - TRYNA FIND A WAY (DUB MIX)
The ultimate club trance. Smooth, shmoody and funkin. In our opinion has everything you could want in a late night tune.
WAYNE SNOW – RED RUNNER (GLENN ASTRO & IMYRMIND REMIX)
Super crunchy and gritty production on this track. Always love using this song as a reference for percussion production.
OSO LEONE – VIRTUAL U
Perfect match for the rainy days. Everything just sits in the sweet spot and has such a tight groove throughout the whole track.
NEW SURPRISE – SURPRISE CHEF (HARVEY SUTHERLAND’S WEIRD FLEX MIX)
When an unstoppable force (Surprise Chef) meets an immovable object (Harvey Sutherland)
BONUS TUNE; KINGSTON DUB TOWN – THE DYNAMITES
Should end on something to wind down with. Beautiful tune. King Tubby’s production was a huge inspiration for the mix of Doplar. Very hypnotic in the way things move through the recording. Super colourful and sparse sounds.
